Across the world, sky watchers have been treated to the sight of a partial solar eclipse. Visible for three hours, the best views were apparently in north eastern Sweden. The moon’s shadow hides between a half and two thirds of the sun’s surface, turning it into a yellow or red crescent. For most of Europe it started at sunrise, but in central Russia and China it occurs at sunset. This year’s second partial solar eclipse will take place on June 1. Astronomers say there will be a total eclipse of the sun in November 2012. Footage used in this video was taken in Moscow, Giza (Egypt), Jerusalem and Ramallah (West Bank). NASA released video of a large solar flare that erupted February 24. Scientists say the flare was directed away from earth and should not disrupt satellites or communications. (Feb. 27)

NASA’s Solar Dynamic Observatory filmed images of a large solar flare on February 24 2011. The (M3.6 rating) event is not the strongest solar flare ever recorded but was still big enough to kick up a huge tendril of plasma, known as a solar prominence. The entire eruption lasted for about 90 minutes. Thursday’s flare was the latest in a recent series of of sun storm emissions, but its blast was directed away from the Earth and is not expected to pose any disruption to satellites or other electronic systems.
