SHAPE-SHIFTING SUNSPOT: Every time you look, sunspot 1271 has a new outline. For the past two days the active region has been in a constant state of change, altering its shape on an hourly basis. These rapid changes have caused the sunspot’s magnetic field to criss-cross and tangle. The magnetic field now has a “beta-gamma” configuration that harbors energy for M-class solar flares. Any such flares today would be approximately Earth-directed because the sunspot is not far from disk-center. Readers with sunspot telecopes are encouraged to monitor developments.

GIANT SINE WAVE: Imagine a sine wave 400000 km long. Today, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory is monitoring just such a structure. It’s an enormous filament of magnetism slithering over the sun’s northeastern limb:September 1st, 2011.

An active filament of solar magnetism is snaking around the sun’s southeastern limb today. Measuring more than 200000 km along its sinuous backbone, the vast structure is in a constant state of motion. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the action 20:16 UT on April 5th Filaments as agitated as this one is often erupt and hurl parts of themselves into space. Because of the filament’s location on the sun’s limb, any such blast would not be Earth-directed, but it would be photogenic! Across the world, sky watchers have been treated to the sight of a partial solar eclipse. Visible for three hours, the best views were apparently in north eastern Sweden. The moon’s shadow hides between a half and two thirds of the sun’s surface, turning it into a yellow or red crescent. For most of Europe it started at sunrise, but in central Russia and China it occurs at sunset. This year’s second partial solar eclipse will take place on June 1.
